Last night was the Tony Awards, one of the biggest parties of New York, a celebration of Broadway and singing and dancing and acting. This year, Sean Hayes was the host, and by all accounts, he did a wonderful job. Sean opened the show with a little appearance from his friend Kristin Chenoweth, who defended him against Newsweek’s homophobic critic. They responded the only way they could - by making out in front of the packed audience. Sean looks like a good kisser!

I have to admit, I didn’t watch it, not because I really have anything against the theatre, it’s just that I don’t think the Tonys are a particularly exciting awards show. However, the Tonys went Hollywood this year, and several big “names” won awards. Denzel Washington took home best actor in a non-musical, and his Fences costar Viola Davis (Oscar nominated for Doubt) took home Best Actress. Also receiving awards: Scarlett Johansson for best featured performance (it’s like a supporting actress award), and Catherine Zeta-Jones for her work in musical A Little Night Music. For a complete recap, go to HuffPo or People Magazine. From here, I just wanted to cover the fashion.

I liked Scarlett Johansson’s dress and styling a lot. For once, Scar didn’t get anything wrong. Great dress, great fit, great makeup and decent hair. Does she give off the faint whiff of “corpsey”? Sure. But she doesn’t look deathly, so that’s an improvement.

Katie Holmes was a presenter… with Daniel Radcliffe. Is Daniel really, really short or is Katie just that tall? Probably both. The dress is meh. The color is okay, I guess, but it washes her out, and it doesn’t look long enough. Like it’s a dress meant for Suri. Daniel looks adorable, though.

I love Viola Davis, seen here with Denzel. I’ve loved her for many years, ever since that show she did with Sam Waterston. So I’ve followed her career, and can I just say something? She has the right idea with her style, she really does. She likes to look a bit sexy on the red carpet, and her makeup and hair usually look awesome. But she consistently has fabric issues with her dresses/gowns. This acid yellow-green is hideous, and it’s only because I like Viola that I think it looks okay.

Okay, seriously, how much work has Catherine Zeta-Jones had? She’s so beautiful, but looking through all of these photos of her… she looks like a 50-something woman who recently had an extreme facelift. Oh, I think the dress is Versace. It’s really pretty.

F-ck me, how much do I love Cate Blanchett? On anyone else, this suit would be a disaster. On Cate, it’s AMAZING.

Jada…girl, stop. This sh-t ain’t good. Why are you even there? And why are wearing that sh-t?

Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas. Is it just me, or has Antonio gone in for a little work too? He looks very young and refreshed. Although I suspect anyone would look young and fresh standing next to Melanie. No offense to Melanie, who I actually like. But yikes.

Ugh, I do not care for Naomi Watts’ dress at all. It may be high-fashion and all, but that color on a fair-skinned blonde makes it seem like Liev Schreiber is standing next to an statue of oatmeal. Liev looks cute, though. A bit squinty.

Angela Lansbury! She got some kind of lifetime achievement something or other. She looks so f-cking good. I love when older gals wear red. My verdict: Angela is best dressed at the Tonys.

My God, will you look at Helen Mirren’s body? It’s insane how amazing she looks. I even like the simple dress, with what I can only imagine is a sprig of mistletoe on her boob.

Last night was the big Crystal + Lucy Awards ceremony in LA. The awards generally celebrate women in film and television, and last night the honorees were people like Zoe Saldana (”Face of the Future” award), Eva Marie Saint (Legacy Series Spotlight tribute) and Courteney Cox (an award for excellence in television). Jennifer Aniston “surprised” everyone by showing up to support Courteney. I guess Jennifer didn’t RSVP? Who knows. At first I thought Courteney didn’t look too thrilled to see Aniston, considering Cox is making grumpy faces in most of the photos. But I don’t think her face will move beyond that expression, honestly. Her face has gotten to the point where I barely recognize her as the once-gorgeous young television actress - she could be Janice Dickinson’s more-Botoxed sister at this point. Jennifer looks pretty though.

Anyway, I only care about the fashion. My guess is that the dress code is supposed to be business-cocktail, and most people pretty much adhered to that. Here’s Emily Blunt in an interesting black dress… I don’t care for her makeup job though:

Zoe was one the few girls wearing white, so she stood out. The dress isn’t bad or anything, I just wish she (and her stylist Rachel Zoe) would change it up a little with the big collars, big shirts, big, big, big. Why not go streamlined for one appearance?

2010 Women In Film Crystal+Lucy Awards

Busy Phillips looks like hell. That is one unflattering dress:

Rachel Griffiths: great actress, hideous dresser. She kept it low-key in black, though. Meh. At least it wasn’t pink ruffles, like that one time at the Golden Globes.

Leslie Mann and her husband Judd Apatow. I think Leslie is so pretty, but… eh. It’s mostly the weird hair that ruins it for me for this appearance:

Debra Messing’s shoes don’t fit. Other than that, meh.

I thought Laura Dern was Darryl Hannah. That’s not a good thing.

My Lord, Sally Field just looks a million times better than many of the ladies half (or even a third) of her age. I love her suit.

Carrie Underwood wins Entertainer of the Year at the ACM Awards in Las Vegas

I didn’t watch the Academy of Country Music Awards, which were on last night. So I’m just going by the coverage this morning. The big winners of the night included Lady Antebellum, Brad Paisley, Miranda Lambert, and Carrie Underwood being named Entertainer of the Year for the second year in a row. People Mag has more details here.

It seems like Taylor Swift had one of the big performances, and although I know people like to bash her, I think her voice sounded good and she gave a solid performance (unlike at the Grammys). It featured a costume change from a white rip-away gown to a black outfit, a floating balcony thing, a gospel choir, crowd surfing and a fake tattoo. Here’s her performance (and introduction by LL Cool J, who was there because he appreciates country music…?). Here you go (the last half of the video in a non-Swifty performance, whatever:

Now, for the fashion. Since it’s country music, I never really have high expectations of the fashion. That’s not a major criticism - I’m Southern, most of the artists are Southern, I know what I’m getting when I look at the fashion - lots of big hair and ball gowns. That’s what Southern women like! So when a non-Southern lady comes to the party, it can be a disaster. Like Nicole Kidman, in a L’Wren Scott black tuxedo dress:

Yikes. I mean, her body looks good. But the dress… oh, Nicole. Next up, Carrie Underwood. The header photo of Carrie is her performance dress, a prom-looking thing with big skirt. I mean, sure, it looks okay. I think Carrie’s fashion is crappy no matter the event, though, so it’s not like I’m looking at her EVER to make a big-impact fashion moment. Here’s what she wore on the red carpet:

45th Annual Academy Of Country Music Awards - Arrivals

Cute? Sure. Cheap? Yes. It looks like a mall dress. And here’s Taylor Swift’s red carpet dress:

44th CMA Awards - Arrivals

I like this one a lot for Swifty. She’s been doing a lot sequins and beading lately, so it’s nice to see her in a dress made of chiffon or silk or whatever. I like the lace insets too- it’s a very pretty dress, but Swifty could have styled it a bit better, maybe with sleeker hair?

Next up, LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian. I hate myself, but I think this might be the best LeAnn has ever looked. She trimmed her bangs so they’re not in her eyes anymore, and the dress has a great cut, and a it’s a great color. Eddie looks dapper too:

44th CMA Awards - Arrivals

Now, I think quite a bit of Faith Hill’s beauty. I find her gorgeous, and she’s got a killer figure. I’m not sure what’s happening in this dress:

44th CMA Awards - Arrivals

It could have been cute. But it’s too baggy and the styling - especially her hair - is horrible. Here’s another couple, Matthew and Camila. Uh… so, Camila is pregnant again, I guess:

44th CMA Awards - Arrivals

Yep. I think she is. CB thinks it’s just the dress. Well, if she’s pregnant again, good for them, they seem happy. If not… well, God bless.

Anyway, those are just the people I found interesting. For more fashion, Wonderwall has a good slideshow.

James Cameron Honored On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Sigourney Weaver came off a little “sour grapes” in a recent press conference promoting “Avatar” in Brazil this weekend. Weaver has a long history of working with the blockbuster movie’s director, James Cameron, and she thinks his snub at this year’s Academy Awards was intentional on the part of the Academy. Weaver hinted that the Oscar voters were intent on making Kathryn Bigelow, Cameron’s ex-wife and director of “The Hurt Locker,” the feel-good story of the awards season by making her the first female director to take home a trophy.

While promoting ‘Avatar’ in Brazil over the weekend, Sigourney Weaver slammed the Academy for voting for ‘The Hurt Locker’ and Kathryn Bigelow. She said Jim Cameron lost to his ex-wife, Kathryn Bigelow, because she’s a woman–who became the first ever to take home the Best Director Oscar.

“Jim didn’t have breasts, and I think that was the reason,” she told told Folha Online, a Brazilian news site. “He should have taken home that Oscar.”

Weaver also voiced her disapproval of the Best Picture choice, suggesting it should have gone to ‘Avatar.’

“In the past, ‘Avatar’ would have won because they [Oscar voters] loved to hand out awards to big productions, like ‘Ben-Hur.’ Today it’s fashionable to give the Oscar to a small movie that nobody saw,” Weaver said.

‘The Hurt Locker’ has taken in a total of $40 million worldwide ($16 million in the US), while ‘Avatar’ has grossed a whopping $2.7 billion worldwide ($743.7 million in the US).

[From Huffington Post]

Let’s hope Sigourney was just kidding around, otherwise she comes off as kind of a bitch here. I mean, it is pretty obvious that “Avatar” is a huge commercial success over “The Hurt Locker,” so what if it didn’t take home any Oscars? I also think it’s quite presumptuous of Weaver to say that if James Cameron were a woman, or it Kathryn Bigelow were not, the voting results would be different. Maybe the Academy didn’t vote for James because they didn’t think his movie was all that great, visual effects aside. Or maybe it’s because James Cameron has a reputation for being an egomaniac and an asshole, and voters didn’t want to make his head any bigger. Who knows?

These are photos of Katy Perry and her boobs at Saturday’s Kids Choice Awards. I was going to do something about the fashion at the event, but honestly, I didn’t know who most of the people/children were, and the majority of the fashion was pretty basic cocktail/casual wear and most people looked fine - not stunning but not horrible. So, I probably won’t do anything about the fashion, but if you want to see a good compilation of Best & Worst dressed, Radar has a good slideshow. The one exception to the “I don’t know who that is but they look okay” summary is Katy Perry. Because this chick has no fashion sense, and she dresses as if she thinks she’s the Budget Bettie Page-meets-Vegas showgirl. This might have been a cute/sexy look for the MTV VMAs or something, but this is a show for children, Katy. Put your boobs away.

wenn2789982

However, Katy did show that she was a good sport at the actual show. She got slimed! Of course, she had a costume change, into a (rubber?) yellow dress and blue wig.

As for the actual awards, it’s as bad as you would expect. Taylor Lautner was named Favorite Movie Actor, with Miley Cyrus taking Actress. Favorite musical group was Black Eyed Peas, and the favorite TV actor and actress were Dylan Sprouse and Selena Gomez. Favorite Movie? Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel. Yikes! First Lady Michelle Obama was given the “Big Help Award” for all of her work to improve kids’ diets. Full list of winners here. There were also performances by Justin Bieber and Rihanna. I put some photos of Rihanna below - she wore the pale pink on the red carpet, and performed in the black and hot pink dress. I actually like the pale pink one, but is she wearing silver ankle socks with her high heels?
